"What conservationists have said from the beginning is that this world, and all its treasures, is finite. Treat it right and you will live. Squander and plunder and rape and you will someday suffer." - WOC founder Tom Bell
Programs - Red Desert - Threats

Wyoming is fast becoming the energy capital of the United States. As a state, Wyoming is the fourth largest producer of natural gas and the seventh largest producer of on shore oil. The Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming, considered to be one of the hottest natural gas plays in the United States, is expected to have 51,000 coal bed methane, oil and conventional gas wells by 2010. Southwest and central Wyoming, with eight times the amount of coal bed methane in the Greater Green River Basin than in the Powder River Basin, could have over 20,000 methane, oil and gas wells drilled within the next two decades. With an ever expanding network of roads, pipelines and utility lines accompanying such oil and gas development, the impacts to landscapes, wildlife, air and water quality can be devastating.

Our concerns for the Red Desert are numerous, and include rampant oil and gas development, overgrazing and irresponsible recreation and off-road vehicle use. However, with a large part of the gas-rich "Greater Green River Basin" within the boundaries of the Red Desert, and over 20,000 oil, gas and coal bed methane wells slated for southwestern and central Wyoming within the next two decades, we will explore all legal measures to ensure that parts of the Red Desert are not forever compromised for future generations.
