To honor the late Emily Stevens' life-long commitment to conservation and to further WOC's education goals, each year since 1998 we have offered a selection of natural history and environmental education books to Wyoming's 23 county libraries.
Each library chooses one book from a variety of new titles for WOC to donate in Emily's honor. As Crook County Public Library Director Jill Mackey notes, "This program is a wonderful way to keep Emily's memory alive across the state while providing natural history and conservation-related books to the general public. What a great way to fulfill your mission!"
Of the fifteen book choices we offered this year, the three most popular were: Wind Energy Basics: A Guide to Small and Micro Wind Systems, by Gipe and Perez; Ranching West of the 100th Meridian: Culture, Ecology and Economics, by Knight, Gilgert and Marston (eds.); and Pushed off the Mountain: Sold Down the River, by Western.
These books will help Wyoming residents move into the future by learning how to use wind energy, gaining a better understanding of the role of ranching in the West and taking a critical look at the cowboy myth that pervades Wyoming's identity and traps the state in the 19th century. Look for these books at your local library or bookstore! |
