Steve Jones Named Volunteer of the Year

Steve Jones, WOC's Watershed Protection Program Attorney, has been named "Volunteer of the Year" for 2001 by the Land and Water Fund of the Rockies, a regional conservation group based in Boulder, Colorado.

Over the past three years, Steve has volunteered hundreds of hours of his

personal time providing legal assistance to the Land and Water Fund and Laramie-based Biodiversity Associates.

In one of his pro-bono efforts, Steve successfully argued a suit requiring the U.S. Forest Service to analyze the environmental impacts of opening a closed road in the Medicine Bow National Forest to access a state-owned section of land that was slated for logging.

Steve also volunteered his legal services to Biodiversity Associates in an ongoing lawsuit against the Forest Service for its failure to update a 15-year-old management plan for the Medicine Bow National Forest, in violation of the National Forest Management Act.
