BNF - What You Can Do
Forest Service officials need your help in developing a long-term vision for the Bighorn National Forest. Your participation is valued, as public involvement brings different perspectives to the decision-making process and can appreciably improve the quality of decisions made by our government officials.
While the official deadline for scoping comments has passed, the Forest Service will not begin an in-depth analysis of public comments until the end of February. Please write to the Bighorn National Forest by February 28 and tell officials that the revised Forest Plan should:
- Prohibit logging on the BHNF unless it is proven sustainable to forest health
- Provide increased protections for unique areas including Circle Park, Littlehorn Canyon, Tongue River Canyon, Tensleep Canyon, Shell Canyon, Devils Canyon, Rock Creek Roadless Area and Medicine Mountain
- Consider recommending the addition of existing roadless areas to the Cloud Peak Wilderness
- Prohibit grazing in critical wildlife habitat and examine the impacts of grazing on water quality, wildlife and native plants
o Examine the impacts of motorized travel on wildlife, soils, current road and trail systems and other back-country users
Perhaps more importantly, please write to the Forest Service at any point during this open process to inform the agency of any new information or new science that it should consider while revising its long-term vision for the Bighorn National Forest.
